MLB trade rumors: Predicting where Sonny Gray, Yu Darvish, Justin Verlander land

A trio of pitchers headlines the latest rumors heading into the MLB trade deadline. Surprise, surprise. While starting pitchers are no strangers to the trade market, seeing pitchers the caliber of Sonny Gray, Yu Darvish and Justin Verlander is eye-opening.MORE: Inside the mind of an MLB GM heading into the trade deadlineWith a critical weekend of games coming up, here arethe latest rumors heading toward Monday’s trade deadline.Sonny Gray latest rumorsLatest rumors: The asking price could be too high for Yankees, according to Fanrag Sports’ Jon Heyman, but they are still seriously considering him. A deal could get done without including Triple A prospects. Both the Astros and the Brewers are on the periphery, according to Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal.Prediction:YankeesAnalysis:Of all the teams that need a front-end starter toshore up the rotation, it has to be the Astros. They have a great one-two in Dallas Keuchel and Lance McCullers, but injuries have turned out to be a speedbump for the Astros this season. They still have a healthy lead in the AL West, but a Gray-type could put them over the top.ButHe’ll probably end up with the Yankees. The Yankees are super unwilling to part with any Alcides Escobar Jersey of their top guys namely Clint Frazier and Gleyber Torres in pursuit of Gray, which isnewfound restraint for the Bronx boys.Gray is everything the Yankees want in a starting pitcher: specifically, a solid fastball-changeup combination that the team preaches to all of its young starters coming through the system. Add in the fact that Gray is under team control through 2019, the cost-conscious Yankees will probably make it happen.MORE: MLB trade tracker follow the latest moves heading into the deadline Yu Darvish latest rumorsLatest rumors:It’s unsure as to whetherDarvish will be willing to waive his no-trade clause to head to a team like the Cubs or the Indians, though both are interested, according to Ken Rosenthal.Jon Heyman reported on MLB Network’s “High Heat” that the Rangers are still considering whether or not to keep Darvish, though the spectrum is leaning towards trading him.Prediction:DodgersAnalysis:Man, Darvish’s no-tradeclause really throws a wrench in things.Among the clubs blocked, three make lots of sense for Darvish: the Indians, the Cubs and the Red Sox.Though David Price hit the disabled listFriday with a re-emergence of elbow i sues, Heyman reportedthere’s no evidence that Boston will be exploring trade options. With Kershaw down for the next month or so, the Dodgers make the most sense for Darvish. They have the prospects to get it done, and if they really want to solidify a shot at the World Series even after Kershaw gets back, a Kershaw/Darvish/Wood one-through-three makes a lot of sense even if Darvish got shelled for 10 runs his last time out.Justin Verlander latest rumorsRumors: TheDodgers were originally linked, but their current conversations are focused more on Yu Darvish and Sonny Gray than Verlander, according to Fox Sports’ Jon Morosi. Prediction:Remains withTigersAnalysis:At the end of the day, Verlander is making a lot of money. And while he’s still a top-of-the-rotation guy, it’s hard to see someone A) taking the majority of the money he’s got left ($56 million, with a $22 million vesting option for 2020) and B) giving up a ton of prospects for a 34-year-old starter with a lot of innings on his arm.The Tigers are probably a little unwilling to back down off their trade demands in order to start a full-blown rebuild in coming years, but Verlander also isn’t getting any younger. It’s hard to see Verlander getting moved unle s Detroit eats some of that money, but that seems unlikely, at least this weekend.
